Around The Home: Cleaning Out The Closet

Happy Spring Cleaning Sunday!

This mess has been on my to-do list for a very long time… I have been putting it off for SO long, I knew that I finally just needed to tackle it and get it done! I wanted to share this process with you to not only inspire a little spring cleaning in others, but to share some of my best closet organization hacks!

SO. I will be perfectly honest and just admit that I had clothes in my closet that I got when I was like 13 years old still… Ugh don’t ask me why, but I just, I guess, held onto it thinking maybe I would wear it again one day! Well not only was I wrong, but I continued to add to this unending mess of clutter for the next 17 years! To say that cleaning this all out was a project; well that is the understatement of the year!

OK. So to get started I sorted everything I owned into sections and color coded them.

I know, I know, this sounds like WAY too much work, but just bare with me, it is worth it! I put the sweaters with the sweaters, the t-shirts with the t-shirts, the dress shirts with the dress shirts, separated the jeans from the slacks…and so on. Once it was all divided into sections I was able to clearly see what I owned, and how much I actually had of one thing. Like who needs 15 grey sweaters…I mean really now…

Once I could see everything clearly, it made it easy to pull what I not only no longer wanted, but also what I no longer needed.

The next step is then, you guessed it, going through each section and pulling what I did not want OR need anymore! I ended up pulling a full 5 bags full of things, and got them loaded into the car to donate. I actually took them all to Plato’s closet first to sell some of the brand name items, and the rest went either to our garage sale or Good Will.

It felt amazing to get rid of all the extra clutter that I did not need!

After that was all done it was time to organize what remained in my closet! This is my favorite part of any “cleaning-out” project I do! I am a very organize-minded person naturally, so having some order is very therapeutic for me! So, I started by deciding how I wanted my closet set up, and what placements made the most sense. I put my everyday basics front and center since that is what I grab for most often. After that was done it was easy to build around that.

The center here shows crop tops, short sleeve, and long sleeve basic tees that I wear the most. To the right are my few dresses, and to the left I have first my casual dress tops, and then my dress tops, and then professional dress wear. (Button ups and slacks).

To the right I hung my everyday jeans and shorts. (Again color coded.) I use velvet hangers for my jeans so they don’t slide off! LOVE these hangers for not only jeans but for hanging any pants. They will never fail to hold your pants on, and eliminate the issue of them sliding off onto the floor!

It helps so much to be able to see everything clearly, as well as have it stored in a way that won’t damage the items!

To the left I have my sweaters, jackets and jerseys. Below that are my handbags and my cosmetic dresser drawers. I hang my handbags on shower curtain hooks! They work perfectly for hanging on a closet rod, and to keep from having to pile them into a box, or on a shelf!

The built in shelf holds my shoes, and the white bins on the top shelf above hold each my bulky sweatshirts, sweatpants, and then the last one has my maternity clothes. (Saving those for the future!) I LOVE the bin idea because it keeps the bulky clutter out of sight, and makes for a cleaner and more organized appeal!

OK! There you have it!

Slowly but surely I am getting the spring cleaning done around the house, and I have to say it feels amazing! It is symbolic to me, that cleaning out and starting fresh for the new season shows a change for the year to come. And that is so exciting! I would love to hear any of your spring cleaning tips! I will be showing how I did my pantry in an upcoming post too!

Have you read the Konmari book? I cleaned out my closet like this, then I read that book, and got rid of another 8 bags. I sold a bunch of maternity clothes and things in good shape on Poshmark. I’ve made almost $900!

I love the space of your closet! I bet it feels great to get rid of all of that old and unnecessary stuff. I try to go through my closet twice a year. Anything I’m slightly in the fence about I box up, then by the time of the next clean out I generally know whether I need to toss it or keep it.
