When I was little, my younger sister and I used to love to pretend to believe in fairies! One year we sat down by the river in my parents backyard and we built a fairy house so the fairies could come and enjoy it when we weren’t looking. (You know… when fairies come out from hiding..obviously!) It was a fun fantasy and to this day I look back on this memory with fondness.

I was a little dreamer as young girl and could always be found running around the yard bare foot and tangled hair, free as can be. I had a wild spirit and I followed it where ever it led me. The imagination was unbeatable, I basically lived in a make believe world…and I loved it! Since then I have grown up a bit, but I haven’t forgotten the bliss of imagination land and I am bond and determined to bring those same dreams to my own daughters!

From the moment I knew I was having a girl the first time around, I knew that one day I would sit down with her and build a fairy garden. Now with two little girls, I feel my eldest is at a point in her life where should would really enjoy it, so we are welcoming spring by building a fairy garden! This is how we did it…

Gathering Supplies

I wanted the whole project to be fairly easy and fun for my daughter, Aria. Although, I knew I would be doing most of the putting together part, I wanted her to feel like she was really the one making this special fairy garden and to know it is hers. All of the supplies can be found at Micheal’s, I got everything there except for the hot glue gun I used which I already owned.

Micheal’s has an entire section of the store dedicated to Fairy garden supplies. That includes little fairy figurines, fairy houses, swings, moss, flowers, signs, little whimsical animal figurines, and literally SO MUCH MORE. It is kind of a dark hole you can fall into, and it was so fun picking out our favorites for our fairy garden! I let Aria say yes or no as I held up options until we had everything we needed.

Putting It Together

The first thing I did was lay out all the pieces and the drawer base, and let Aria play with the pieces for a bit. I asked her, where should the fairies’ house be? Where do you think is the best place for the fairies to have their picnics? Where should the pink tree go?.. etc.. After she helped to pick out locations for each piece I started to glue them one by one into place. We chose faux moss to be the ground of our fairy garden, so I cut the pieces to fit around each piece and glued them down.

I left the fairies themselves and the extra floral pieces and butterflies out so Aria could see where she wanted them after the bigger pieces and the moss were glued down. She LOVED playing with the fairies and moving them around the garden! Eventually we decided on their locations and glued them down as well. We also glued down the butterflies and any extra florals to finish it off.

I had some extra fairy lights that just so happened to be pink, so I twisted them into the garden for one final whimsical touch. Aria loved seeing it light up! She even said “Wow!”, it was adorable! The whole thing took about an hour to make, and even though Aria is still very young it was such a sweet and fun spring project to do together. The plan is to make a new fairy garden each year until she doesn’t want to anymore and hang them in the playroom!
