credit debt
It has been a really magical year for me. I cannot believe how much has changed in just one year. I look back on where I was just a couple years ago and I shudder a little bit. It has always been a challenge for me to keep a balance in my checking account, let alone a savings account, and for some reason I still wanted to spend, spend, spend. Now I can sit back and breathe because not only am I working hard to save and be smart about my spending, but I can be proud of a credit score that doesn’t gleam red when I pull it up online.

Let me give you the story because it certainly was not easy, but it was more than worth it. My debt affected a lot more people then just myself, and it affected me much deeper then I even was aware of. It wasn’t until I sat down and took a look at the numbers that it hit me. I was no longer a kid, I wasn’t a teenager, and I certainly had long since passed the point of being able to get away with adolescent behavior. I was an adult, and had a lot of responsibility hanging over me, and it was time to take responsibility for it.

I went to school for the normal 4 years, but I bounced around from university to university and sort of spread out the consistency in spurts. That is another story, but the point is that I racked up a lot of student loan debt because I had to keep enrolling and applying for loans at each school. Not to mention transferring credits is not always easy, and I had to repeat some courses because if it. Suffice to say I was weighed down with student loan debt and with a small income I was not making a dent in it for years after school was out. It may not seem like a big deal to have a late payment or derogatory mark here or there from a creditor. But it can actually have long-standing consequences, and in some instances can stay on your report for seven years. Ugh!
