DIY Yarn Weave Ghost

Yarn weave ghost decor

I love a good yarn craft! I used soft textured, chunky yarn to craft this weave ghost for a fun addition to my holiday decor this year. I made a Christmas tree like this last Holiday season and it was by far one of my favorite crafts of the season, so I knew I wanted to make one for Halloween. It might look intimidating, but it is actually much easier than you would think to make one of these.

Above is the Christmas Tree I made last year. Both the ghost and the tree took me about 1.5 hours each to make. Not long at all! And that is with toddler interruptions! If you are looking for a fun craft to do that will add some texture to your decor, this is something you can definitely do! These are also really beautiful made into other shapes and pinned up in a nursery room or kids playroom.

I used six different types of yarn for the ghost, all purchased from Hobby Lobby. My favorite brand of yarn is Yarn Bee, you can find tons of different thicknesses and textures in this brand and it is all amazing quality. You will also need a rug canvas like the one shown above, a good scissor, and tape to wrap around the end of the yarn to help it weave into the rug canvas holes.

Step 1. Start by laying out your rug canvas and drawing out the shape you want to make. Cut that out and make any markings for eyes, details, etc…

Step 2. Choose your first yarn and wrap tape around one end to give it a tip. This will help you thread the yarn through holes. Tie the other end of the yarn in a double knot so it doesn’t slip through.

Step 3. Weave your yarn in and out in sections throughout your piece. I threaded through every two or three wholes to give it a real organic kind of rustic feel. Switch out your yarn as you go to create a mixed media style and to emphasize details in your piece.

Step 4. Tie off any ends on the back and trim to make them short.

Step 5. Hang and enjoy! I used two tacks to hang up our ghost since it will only be up for a couple of weeks. You could also use command hooks if you do not want to put holes in the wall.
